Review: Trainwreck

Amy Schumer is the BOSS! I've got to be honest, I wasn't her biggest fan before this movie came out. I do respect her as a woman who writes, directs and stars in her own  series but I don't always get her humour. All that changed tonight *stares into the distance dramatically*. Seriously though, if you are a person who enjoys RomComs with independent, relatable, witty leading ladies then you are in for a treat!

The main plot is basically the usual boy meets girl romantic cliche. However, this time, instead of the playboy leading man gradually falling in love when he least expects it, Schumer inserts herself into that role. She's happy to hook up with guys whenever she feels like it and doesn't stress out about breaking a few hearts along the way. How refreshing for modern ladies to have this example of a woman who doesn't feel ashamed for waking up in the bed of a guy she barely knows! For years it has been accepted that men who sleep around are heroes while women who do the same are whores. Amy totally challenges that societal norm, while still acknowledging the minor disadvantages of this kind of lifestyle. Spoiler alert: she tells us a story about getting a condom stuck up at her cervix due to some heavy duty "banging". The fact that she shares these confessions with other women on the big screen, after we have been constantly told that this sort of behaviour is "unladylike" (whatever that means) is what makes her such an exhilarating female protagonist!

Of course, along the way she finds a man that makes her reconsider the single lady lifestyle. Maybe this is the slightly less feminist aspect of the movie but that is usually the way these romantic comedies pan out when there is a male lead. Really, what did we expect? Furthermore, she forms this attachment without compromising herself or changing to make anyone else happy. Instead her character grows and develops within the relationship and any changes are the result of a need for self improvement.

This film has everything I've ever wanted in a romantic comedy:

1. Independent, unapologetic, hilarious leading lady
2. Strong minor female characters (eg. her boss and sister)
3. A lot of naked men
4. Open, non-judgmental discussions about sex from the female perspective
5. Acceptance of female relationships in all forms
6. Celebration of women in the workforce and stay-at-home moms
7. Men discussing their feelings openly with other men
8. John Cena trying to talk dirty but only being able to talk about fitness
9. A non-threatening, slightly nerdy and adorable, witty leading man
10. A kick-ass dance number

If you enjoy everything mentioned in the list above you will LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie. 100% of Katie Dennison's would recommend you go see "Trainwreck" immediately. Drop whatever you're doing. Don't even stop to put on pants. Why are you still reading this? Go!
